Could you tell us a little bit about your business?
Anew is a problem-solving company and single-use oil-based packaging is a problem.
We created a circular water bottle and an end-to-end packaging company to solve that.
If someone wants to drink water, wash their hair, or feed their dog, they have to pull the fossil resource oil out of the ground and leave the toxic packaging in the environment after it has been used for several minutes. It makes no sense. eternally.
We created a plant-based, reusable and recyclable water bottle to show what is possible when we design our packaging and systems around a circular economy. To help other businesses, we provide plug-and-play circular packaging solutions utilizing innovative materials and circular systems.
What’s the story behind your business idea?
When I drove from Auckland to Wellington in 2015, I realized there were no reusable drink bottles. When I parked my car at a gas station, I was frustrated that if I wanted to buy water, my only option was petroleum-based plastic bottles for my daily needs.
I spent the next few years developing plant-based compostable water bottles, a collection network to collect them, and developed my own composting site to compost them.
We recently developed a plant-based reusable bottle that is dishwasher safe to build a bridge to the mainstream reuse culture. It is also recyclable. If it is returned, we will make a new bottle here in New Zealand.
It’s about trying to design your system to be lean.
What programs, learning, and mentoring have helped you so far?
One of my favorite books by far is “Let my people go Surf”. It shows the power and influence companies can have to bring about positive change in the world. Businesses like ours are focused on enabling people to go about their daily lives without needlessly harming them. I find inspiration in traveling with common activities that inspire me to realize how to do simple things better.
