As Scotland beat England 29-23 at Twickenham, Doohan van der Merve evoked ‘Jonah Lom vibes’ and was dubbed ‘Rugby Messi’ for a spectacular solo try.
The South African-born winger was compared to New Zealand legend Lomu after defeating five players to score from his own half in Scotland’s thrilling Calcutta Cup victory.
The ‘best ever’ try lit up both teams’ openers and social media, with some fans last seeing such magic 27 years ago.
Lom defeated England by four tries in the 1995 World Cup semi-finals.
Van der Merwe’s 60-meter shot evoked nostalgia and awe on the net.
One fan said, “I really haven’t seen a try like Duhan van der Merve’s these days.”
Another request: “Stop counting. It’s over. Six Nations Try of the Tournament!”
The 27-year-old van der Merwe quickly showed his intentions by successfully collecting England’s kicks in his own half.
The Edinburgh rugby star sprinted between two players, overtook another, stumbled on the foot of the fourth and fended off the final challenge to enter the race.
Not many challenged this verdict: “great attempt, poor defense”.
But there was more praise for VDW than criticism of England.
and several observers claiming that his skills matched the soccer GOAT’s individual goals Lionel Messi.
“Duhan van der Merve scored one of the best tries we’ve seen all year.”
And indeed jt was the VDW as Scotland overturned England’s 23-22 lead to win with an excellent team try in the 6th minute.
