Supporting schools through Omicron distribution – SchoolNews

The government says it is supporting schools and courses through the spread of Omicron, where access to masks and rapid antigen tests are required.

“The well-being of our youth is at the heart of everything we do. “Protecting our school staff with access to medical-grade masks in schools, including the need for vaccinations, is paramount,” said Education Minister Chris Hippins.

“One of the best things we can do to keep staff and students well is to isolate positive cases and household contacts to prevent further transmission to schools. The government will continue to support schools and courses to use hybrid and distance learning for this.

“But we also know that there are several scenarios when children have to go to school and study at an early age. These are the cases when their parents have to go to work and their home is not properly cared for.

“In this case, the Ministry of Education ensures that all its regional offices are provided with rapid antigen tests. Nearly 700,000 tests are now available for schools and early learning services to gain network access as needed.

“Rapid antigen tests should only be used if all teachers and staff are either positive or in need of isolation and are not a suitable person who can supervise children on site or in school on the spot. The same goes for early learning services.

“There is a risk that a person exposed to COVID-19 will return to work with children, so school and early learning leaders need to think carefully about using rapid antigen tests for this purpose.

“The government wants to provide support to schools on the Omicron peak and maintain a safe environment for students on the ground.”

Masks for schools and Kura

“The government is helping our school staff stay safe and well and making sure they have a good supply of masks in the coming weeks and months,” Hippins said.

“Evidence tells us that wearing masks will help slow the spread of Omicron, and we want to see our children and young people learn as much as possible on the ground this year.”

Seven million masks are now available and distributed to 100,000 strong school workers across the country. The Ministry of Education has ordered another $ 36 million to boost supplies as needed.

School staff will be required to wear medical quality masks when working with youngsters age 4 and above, while students will also be required to wear masks this year in groups when they are at home.

“The government also provides masks for students. We know that most families will have their own preferences and there is more flexibility for young people around the types of masks.

“But it is important that schools have a reserve for situations where a student appears without one or their mask is damaged.”

“I would like to thank the schools and the course for their great efforts to prepare for this new school year and for their work in a difficult environment.

“Those schools and cura that already have Omicron cases are doing well in difficult situations, supporting affected students and making close contacts at home, while, for the most part, continuing their education for the on-site student population.”

According to Minister Hippins:

  • Nearly 700,000 rapid antigen tests are available for schools and early learning services if they enroll in a close contact release scheme to maintain oversight of students who need to be on site.
  • Schools must register with the MBIE and then contact their regional office, which will provide rapid antigen tests for teachers.
  • Given that they are about 80% effective, rapid antigen tests should only be used as a last resort – once all other options for teaching and learning continue to be exhausted. This includes using facilitators, non-teachers, or other qualified individuals to supervise children who should be on the ground.
  • For teachers, two million masks have already been distributed to schools, with another five million available if needed. Another 36 million have been ordered.
  • For students, a single supply of 3.8 million masks – including child-sized masks – will be distributed for use in schools 4th and above.
