Self: When did you decide to participate in all six majors this fall?
Shalane Flanagan: I think I officially decided that my goal was February or March, but when I actually trained and shared it with Nike and the support system, it became more and more realistic.So the idea was developed in January / February, but I didn’t really start chasing it training And this spring, maybe May / June, really commit to it.
Self: What was the inspiration that inspired this goal?
Flanagan: There are many layers of inspiration. Above all, I think my best friend, Running, will be reunited after retirement and knee surgery.I felt the need to Set some goals Also. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, with six major World Marathons in 42 days, and how much physical and mental health and athletics can play in your life for yourself, your son, and young women. An interesting statistic is that by the age of 17, more than half of the girls quit sports, which made me really sad. That was exactly the motive. I was a shy young girl, but sports have completely changed my life and gave me confidence and direction. Even the people I met in sports realized that everything was better because of athletics. I felt this was a great platform for sharing that message and connecting with each running community in the city I visited.
Self: Obviously, the time between each marathon is very tight. How do you prepare for training?
Flanagan: It was one of the biggest training weeks in a row of Chicago and Boston marathon simulators.on Sunday [September 5], I ran 21 miles on the flat course, and on Monday I really ran 21 miles Hill course.. My goal is to take a 3 hour break in all 6 marathons. This can be very difficult, but I think it’s about practicing mentally and physically to see where you need to tweak.
The big thing I noticed in that particular simulation is HydrationNot only is refueling and nutrition important Get a really good sleep As much as possible. I have a great support system. Everyone plays a role among my physiotherapist, my family, the Nike team, and my other partner, InsideTracker. I hope the support system will allow me to take care of myself.
I’ve been teaching myself, working with the Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL) and it was a great soundboard to bounce off ideas. I also consult and train with Nike employees Carrie Dimov and Elliott Heath, who belong to the Bowerman Track Club, so I use it as a soundboard for my ideas. I will tweak it based on some of their feedback.
Self: What was the most difficult workout you’ve ever done? How did you handle it?
Flanagan: The continuous simulation of Chicago and Boston was hard. I did a back-to-back simulation and ran 8 miles easily on Tuesday.Then I met Carrie Dimov for really hard grass [workout] Wednesday session. The grass session was the hardest I’ve worked for for a long time. I finished it and said, “It was a lot of fun, but I feel terrible.” However, I recovered well and was able to actually follow up on another very long hard run with another 21 mile carry that same week.She is about to take a break at 2:30 [in the marathon], Therefore, her race pace is about 5:40 per mile, which is much faster than I ever had to run. But I’m trying to record a lot of additional fitness in the bank to make sure I can reach my goal.
