More than 100 Pacifica overstays were deported during last year’s pandemic

Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic putting pressure on the island nation, the deportation of Pacifica overstayers continues.

Fiji has been particularly destroyed by recent viruses, and hospitals are flooded with infected patients.

Nevertheless, New Zealand’s response to Covid has been so successful that it continues to deport members of the Pacifica community. This year, 17 people have been sent back to Fiji.

Members of the Pacific Leadership Forum say it is unacceptable.

“Countries like Fiji have been attacked by Covid and New Zealand has deported people. It’s like throwing someone into a lion’s burrow,” said Makahokobar Pirate.

According to figures obtained by 1 News, about 60 Pacificas have been deported to the New Zealand Immigration Department since the pandemic in 2020. More than half of it was sent to Samoa and Tonga. read more
