In recent years, the number of UFC mainstream title holders has declined. So far, Adesanya has been consistent.
When the lights dimmed in the Gila River Arena while Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori circled the center of the octagon
Fans shouted for a request for a middleweight champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
“Israel, I have $ 7,000 in this,” fans shouted, referring to the bet he was $ 7,000. “Brow your head.”
Adesanya delivered to many gamblers by holding a £ 185 belt when he defeated Italian challenger Vettori in a unanimous decision.
In the last few seconds of the fifth round, when Vettori wrestled with Adesanya against Cage, Adesanya laughed and screamed in fake pain. While waiting for the referee to raise his hand, he jokingly smiled and crossed his fingers as if he didn’t know the obvious result.
His personality and charm at the UFC 263 card’s main event allowed the company to fill 17,208 seats, with ticket sales in excess of $ 4.2 million ($ 5.8 million), a record for the venue. Adesanya’s charm and his performance give the UFC and its fans credibility, something they haven’t had in recent years among mainstream mixed martial arts stars.
Other players competed Saturday night with a second card hosted by the UFC in the United States this year, without coronavirus-related restrictions. Brandon Moreno became the first Mexican-born UFC champion when flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo slipped on his back, strangled and upset. A favorite of fans in the 2007 UFC, Nate Diaz lost to welterweight contender Leon Edwards in an unconventional five-round untitled battle.
However, the night revolved around Adesanya. Adesanya has solidified its position as one of the front-line athletes in promotion.
“He seems to get better every time,” said UFC President Dana White. “Adesanya has become a terrible champion for us.”
Nicknamed The Last Stylebender, Adesanya has incorporated anime cartoon references and dance into his combat style and persona. Throughout the week leading up to the battle, fans in the Phoenix region overwhelmingly supported him compared to Vettori through deafening cheers. On Saturday, he exaggerated his disgust by walking towards the octagon, wearing a decorative face mask and straw hat. He laughed when he thought of doing a “normal strike”.
“It’s not me,” Adesanya said. “It’s not my true self.”
Known for his precise blows, Adesanya defended well from Vettori’s takedowns and countered most attacks. He frequently kicked Vettori’s base, chopping his legs and wobbling.
The two men first clashed in the same arena in 2018, and Adesanya won the split decision. In the rematch, he removed the protracted question. He remained undefeated in his division and his only loss occurred when he moved to the light heavyweight division in an attempt to win a belt in two weight classes.
Still, in recent years, the stars, which have been mass-marketed by the UFC, have slipped for both fighting and external situations.
Women’s mixed martial arts pioneer Ronda Rousey has defended her bantamweight title six times by dominating the submission or knockout finish. Mainstream stardom continued immediately.
However, after Holly Holm landed a devastating head kick and defeated Roussie in 2015, she hid herself and her confidence was clearly lost. She retired shortly after losing twice in a row. Amanda Nunes is the first battle in a year.
Conor McGregor is by far the most popular and most profitable fighter in the history of promotion, and has become prominent through his powerful left hand and persistent trash talk that has irritated his enemies. He became the first two-belt athlete in UFC history to win the featherweight and lightweight championships through knockouts, encouraging others to pursue similar dual-belt dreams.
The 2017 crossover boxing match against Floyd Mayweather brought McGregor a guaranteed $ 30 million profit, and since then he has only fought three times in an octagon. He will headline UFC264 in a trilogy with Dustin Poirier on July 10th in Las Vegas. This is the fight that the UFC is marketing as the biggest event of the year.
McGregor also has legal issues. He pleaed a man in a bar in Ireland in 2019 and threw a cart on a bus carrying a UFC fighter in New York City in 2018. In January, McGregor was sued by a woman in Ireland. He claimed to have raped her in 2018, but he denied.
White said Adesanya approached him the week prior to the battle of Vettori and asked him to compete again in October. Saturday is the sixth time he has found a card and he has fought at least twice a year since participating in the promotion. White said Adesanya was most likely to fight Robert Whittaker, who won in 2019.
“I don’t wait around like these people. I’ll talk about the rest of these champions being active,” Adesanya said. “I don’t talk about it — I just do it.”
Three months ago he moved to light heavyweight and tried to occupy the belt as well. However, he lost to the Jan Blawowic champion. This is the first defeat in Adesanya’s professional career. Still, he said the moment motivated him, not as a deterrent.
“How you grow is that you learn from your mistakes, return to the drawing board, you improve, and you get better from them,” Adesanya said.
Moreno of Tijuana also adjusted for his shortcomings. His fight against Figueiredo served as a rematch from December 2020, when two 125-pound men fought in a draw.
As White wrapped a belt around Moreno’s left shoulder, Moreno was happy to shout at his family. But his little daughter wore pink protective headphones, so she couldn’t hear much of it.
“I’m doing the right thing to put mixed martial arts elsewhere,” Moreno said. “I’m making history.”
The skin on Diaz’s left eye exuded with blood and sweat at the end of the third round of his 170-pound match. This is the result of the blow that Edwards provided throughout many of the battles. However, Diaz seemed to playfully turn his back, curse Edwards, and enjoy the contest.
With one minute left in the final round, Diaz landed a straight left jab, letting Edwards daze. He tried to put pressure on him with a punch, but Edwards survived the rest of the fight. Then, as he did earlier in the week, Diaz smoked marijuana during the press conference.
“I was like” what? “Because I was dominant in the fight and then got caught up in a sudden shot,” Edwards said. “Nate is a legend. He has been in sports for a long time and knows how to ride shots.”
