The looted sarcophagus was returned to Egypt after being placed in a US museum.world news

The ancient sarcophagus was returned to Egypt from a US museum after authorities determined it had been looted.

The nearly 3-meter (9.5-foot) tall sarcophagus was stored at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Texas until Egyptian authorities removed it as part of government efforts to stop the trafficking of stolen antiquities. I asked for its return.

In 2021, Cairo authorities successfully returned to Egypt 5,300 artifacts stolen from around the world.

According to Mostafa Waziri of the Supreme Council of Ancient Egypt, the sarcophagus dates from 664 BC to 332 BC, to the time of Alexander the Great’s expeditions.

Some of the inscriptions have been erased, but Waziri believes the sarcophagus belonged to an ancient priest named Ankenmat.
