Could you tell us a little bit about your business?

Shining Peak is a brewery, bar and restaurant located in the heart of New Plymouth. Our philosophy is that each town’s local brews should be for locals and everything should be for locals. , names all of its beers after different histories, personalities, sights, sounds and even smells of Taranaki.

We also believe that each business should give back to the community, so each month we donate 5% of all beer sales (revenue, not profit) from our brewpubs to various Taranaki charities, organizations, Or donate to an initiative. To date, we have donated over $160,000 to the community.

Our beer is strictly focused on quality and freshness and pairs perfectly with our fresh and vibrant food menu, warm and welcoming service and trendy stores.

What’s the story behind your business idea?

The concept was born from a conversation at a Christmas party. Where do the best ideas come from?I’ve been brewing commercially at a coastal brewery where he’s been brewing for 6 years and felt it was the right time to do his own thing.

It all started with a conversation over beer with Dan. After a few meetings with him and Rene, he decided he needed someone with a hospitality background to run a restaurant and bar. Then came AJ.

A year or so ago, AJ and I were selling a keg of homebrew that raised over $5,000 for a local mental health retreat. This was the starting point that made us think about how to do good with our beer.

What programs, learning, and mentoring have helped you so far?

• First of all, we have a former NZ Entrepreneur of the year on our team. I think this is a pretty good start.
• We have a close relationship with our accountants, Schurr Ireland, and they make sure we are doing good business and keeping a close eye on our numbers.
• I think we have a very diverse business with professionals in all fields. We can guide ourselves in most ways.
