Launched on Monday, August 2, this year, the new EIT program is designed to give automotive engineers the skills they need to repair future electric vehicle fleets.
EIT will be the second polytechnic after Otago and will provide a New Zealand certificate in the automotive engineering (level 5) of electric vehicles.
Program coordinator Miles Gregory states that the one-year part-time program is intended for technicians with a Level 4 (or equivalent skill and knowledge) automotive engineering qualification.
“This is especially for those who actually work in or have worked in the industry. Deep knowledge to help graduates safely and accurately diagnose and repair multiple electric vehicle systems. And the skills are covered. “
“For fairness, electronics have a big inclination, so you have to work in the industry for quite some time to understand the underlying knowledge.”
The course includes battery system, drive system, high voltage auxiliary system, and vehicle management.
Miles says the program has “great needs” due to the large number of electric vehicles in the country and the lack of trained technicians to repair them.
There is also an online component, and we recommend that students from all over the North Island, including Hawke’s Bay and Tyrawiti, register. This complements the program Otago Polytechnic is running to serve South Island Industry for two years.
According to Miles, the program is essentially helping to create a new workforce and is designed to incorporate different brands of electric vehicles.
Three EIT tutors, Steve Main (Tairawiti Campus), Brett Clanswick, and Scott Cunningham (both Hawke’s Bay Campus) taught the program and recently qualified through the Otago Polytechnic technique.
Steve Main teaches theoretical components online in weekly night classes, all three performing three block courses of practical content.
“The industry is discussing the sustainability of EVs and hybrids, but there are certainly quite a few of these on New Zealand’s roads,” says Steve.
“These vehicles need repairs, and to do this safely, technicians need to have a robust and comprehensive knowledge of electrical and electronic principles.”
“I think Otago Polytechnic and EIT offer the most comprehensive EV / hybrid training program currently available in New Zealand. New Zealand is considering or implementing repairs for these models. Peripheral repair centers need to enroll staff in such programs. “
According to Miles, online delivery uses Google-based products that record all classes for students to see.
As a practical component, EIT has two electric training vehicles and two hybrid training vehicles. One each is in Hawke’s Bay and Tyrawity.
“In addition, I bought another electric and hybrid vehicle for complete disassembly. These are used to teach the diagnosis and repair of batteries, drives, and high voltage auxiliary systems.”
Miles said he was keenly interested in the program and encouraged people to sign up for the next level of EIT’s automotive program.
