Care worker accepts online learning to sprint through her qualifications | Education Central

Carol Robinson, a health care worker in the Golden Bay community, has been promoted from a Level 2 Health and Welfare trainee to a registered assessor in just three years. She is currently qualified for primary management with the help of Careerforce’s Aka Toi Online Learning.

Nestled on the northwestern tip of the South Island, Golden Bay Community Health is managed by Nelson Bay Primary Health and is an integrated health center that provides the community with valuable home, hospital level, rest and palliative care. Services also include GP practice, emergency care, related care, district nursing, childbirth, healthy children and public health, saving 4 hours round trip to Nelson Hospital.

Despite being a “people” business, Golden Bay trainees quickly embraced technology. Careerforce, an industry training organization, has developed a mixed system that combines online learning with personal interactions. “Online learning is great because it’s always easy and quick to access, no matter how busy your life is,” Carroll (left) says.

“In my role as an assessor, I am in a position to support about 28 HCA (Healthcare Assistants) who have been or have been trained in Career Force. I have access to them learning on their mobile phones. They will be able to see any markings that pass through. “

Golden Bay Community Health actively encourages training. “When a manager sees something in you, he gives you the opportunity to believe in you and grow and develop,” says Carroll.

Carroll is now a great source of support and inspiration for other trainees.

Three years ago, Carroll enrolled in New Zealand’s Certificate of Health and Welfare (Level 2). “Starting at level 2 is a great foundation,” says Carroll. “You will learn some really valuable principles. You will learn what best practices are and build a lot of confidence.

Carroll then signed up for a Health and Welfare (Level 3) certificate, which was immediately followed by a high degree of Health and Welfare (Level 4) support.

“The Level 4 qualification is a respected and worthy qualification. It was a significant step up. We talked about different stages and different types of dementia. In this role, we will show you how to support this condition. It’s very important to know. “

Former assessor Paula Cohen, Career Force Workplace Advisor, asked Carroll if she was keen on working for herself or supporting others during the training process. Carol began her assessor training as it felt like a natural next step.

Currently a qualified assessor, she is currently enrolled in a Business Level 4 (First Line Management) certificate and is supported by career force assessor John Kenny.
