Adesanya prepares for the next UFC title defense

After defeating Paulo Costa to defend his UFC welterweight title in September 2020, Israel Adesanya turned his attention to Jared Cannonier.

It was a simple call.

“He is the one I want to fight after.”

It was not his next fight, but now he will get his wish. The Herald can confirm that Adesanya will put his title on the line against the rugged American at UFC 276 on July 3, topping one of the biggest papers in the UFC calendar.

Since the Costa fight, Adesanya has had an unsuccessful attempt to take the lightweight crown against then-champion Jan Blachowicz, before taking revenge on Marvin Vettori and Robert Whittaker again in the middleweight division – beating them both by unanimous decision. Adesanya has stressed his desire for new blood to challenge his throne in recent years, and the Cannonier understands just that.

Cannonier has one of the most notable terms in his UFC career since signing on in 2015 as a heavyweight. He took just two races in the category – one win and one loss – before moving on to the light heavyweight division at the end of 2016. Two years later he fell again, winning in the middleweight division and setting a 5-1 record in the heavyweight division with four wins knock out. His only loss was a defeat by a unanimous decision by Whittaker.

The 38-year-old was the first UFC athlete to win by knockout in three different weight classes, with which Conor McGregor has been responding ever since.

The matchup is becoming a dream for fans of impressive battles, with Adesanya and Cannonier preferring to do their job on foot.

It will be a complete home for the City Kickboxing Stall in the tournament, with UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski meeting former champion Max Holloway at the co-main event.

Volkanovski, who trains mainly outside the Freestyle Fighting Gym in Sydney but also works with Auckland’s City Kickboxing team, already has two wins over Holloway, but with the resilient Hawaii clearly the top contender, the pair will meet for third time .

The matches are among the many big matches reserved for the card. Fan favorite Sean O’Malley will face Pedro Munhoz, Robbie Lawler and Bryan Barberena will meet, while midfielder Alex Pereira – who has two wins over Adesanya in the kickboxing arena, including a roller knockout . Top-5 candidate Sean Strickland. Many believe that the winner of this race will win the next shot on the lightweight belt.

The card will be the main attraction of the annual celebrations of the UFC International Match Week – a week that includes the Hall of Fame’s promotional events and many other activities for fans and athletes alike.
