A special one-off holiday to honor Queen Elizabeth II was capped off with memorial events in Wellington and elsewhere around the country.

It’s not a religious holiday, so shops and businesses can stay open, what does it mean to you?

If you’re in Wellington, you can attend the Queen’s Remembrance Service at 2pm at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Aucklanders can mark the occasion with a special service of Queen Elizabeth II at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell from 5pm.

At night in Auckland, the Harbor Bridge, Eden Park, Sky Tower and Te Ara Witi (Light Path) are dyed purple, a color associated with royalty.

If you’re in Christchurch, the Transitional Cathedral holds a special service in honor of the Queen on Sundays at 5pm.

hospitality

Various pubs and cafes across the country nod to the Queen with chalkboard specials, so if tea and scones or tipples are your way of celebrating the Queen, you’re in luck.

If you have a specific bar or cafe in mind, it’s a good idea to check ahead of time.

According to a survey by the Association of Restaurants, almost half will be open that day, while the rest of the members will be on Memorial Day when they are usually closed.

Scones with cream and jam and special gin cocktails, the most popular mentions in the survey, are those associated with the Queen.

One restaurant owner said he was waiting for the grand coronation of Charles III.

In South Canterbury, locals relax and pay homage to the Queen on Mondays.

The one-off holiday for the Queen fell on the same day as the annual South Canterbury Day. The council voted to move this to her November 11th of this year.
