Up to five people were killed in a horrific single-car road crash in Timaru, police said speed was believed to be a factor.

Police confirmed multiple deaths on Saturday at about 7:20 pm in a crash at the intersection of Washdike Sea Download and Meadows Road.

It is understood that up to five people were killed and another was rescued from the shipwreck by paramedics and taken to the hospital.

Dave Gaskin, Regional Commander of Aoraki, said:

“Another person was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. Early signs were that speed was the cause of the crash.

“Roads will be closed for a considerable period of time during the field survey.”

Police confirmed that it was a car accident after it was previously reported as two car accidents.

One was hospitalized after the crash, but police did not confirm the total number of people in the car.

Andrew Norris, Fire and Emergency Shift Manager, said 13 staff members attended the crash site.

“We responded with a washdike unit, a Timaru fire engine, and a second rescue bid north of Temuka,” Norris said.

“They released one from the scene and assisted other agencies, but only one was released at the scene I know.”

Norris said the Serious Crash Unit is working in the field and FENZ may need to return later.

“In our understanding, it was a car accident. The first report revealed that two cars could have been involved, one car,” Norris said. Says.

“It’s not something the crew wants to face.”

Serious crash units are advised.

The road was closed and the driver was asked to avoid the area.

Police said more information would be released when it became available.
