Defense minister to visit Fiji to sign SOFA

Defense Minister Andrew Little said the agreement would allow New Zealand and Fiji to work together more effectively, including in responding to humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Defense Minister Andrew Little will visit Fiji on Tuesday to meet with Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua.

Little said the visit was to further strengthen bilateral ties.

In Fiji, the ministers will sign a Status of Forces Agreement that provides the legal framework for the effective cooperation of New Zealand and Fijian armed forces within each other’s territories.

The two countries will also discuss various defense and security issues.

Little said the deal will allow New Zealand and Fiji to work together more effectively, including in responding to humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

He will return to New Zealand on Thursday.
