Catholic Schools New Diversity Guidelines Welcome All Rangatahi

New diversity guidelines for the country’s 235 Catholic schools offer to endorse Rangatahi on sexual diversity.

New Zealand’s Catholic bishop, who has issued guidelines, says all young people in Catholic schools should be welcomed, supported and encouraged. This is important in navigating the journey from childhood to adulthood and discovering more of who you are, the guidelines say.

“Vulnerable Rangatahi” is specifically mentioned as needing support.

The National Center for Religious Studies has drafted guidelines called “Aloha and Diversity in Catholic Schools.” The draft was based on a “comprehensive dialogue” between bishops, principals, national and parish Catholic educational leaders, and young people.

Bishop Stephen Lowe, Bishop of Auckland, said bishops are fully aware of the need to support school leaders and Rangatahi in navigating the complex realities of sexual diversity.

“Today’s youth are not living in a bubble. There is rhetoric.

“This can challenge and pressure young people, their whanaus, schools, and the wider community,” says Lowe.

The guidelines on diversity articulate the rich teachings of the Catholic Church, he explains.

It also provides practical information and tools to help schools make informed decisions regarding their support of Rangatahi as they grapple with issues of gender diversity within the complexities of the modern world.

“We are all made in God’s image and called to a true relationship with Him, ourselves, each other, and our world,” he says.

“Such relationships are never static and our young people must take a challenging and sacred journey from childhood to adulthood.

“Our identities as adults take time to form. Vulnerable young people should not feel rushed or forced to make decisions about themselves.

“Rangatahi of our school are welcomed with Aloha and Manaakitanga during their journey and encouraged to discover their own beauty and wonder in ways that reflect the words and actions of Jesus’ love, compassion and challenge. deserves to be
