Specialized team working on the project-Downer Waikato

Downer Waikato is building the ability to carry out construction projects in the area.

The company has set up a specific team of about 40 staff to work on construction projects, from small-scale construction to large-scale construction for the general public, such as driveways and small earthwork. Regardless of the size of the project, Downer has a team for the job, says Matt Coford, Stakeholder Manager at Downer Waikato.

“At Downer, our customers are at the heart of all our activities, and Downer is a trusted name with the right process and operational structure to back up projects of all sizes. This gives our clients a lot. It provides security, “he says.

Whatever your project, Downer works closely with your customers to help them succeed with world-leading insights and solutions. With over 150 years of history, Downer designs, builds and maintains assets, infrastructure and equipment, is a leading provider of integrated services in Australia and New Zealand, with approximately 50,000 employees on more than 300 sites. We are hiring staff.

The company’s construction project line is currently very busy, including small-scale construction of the Wighter tanning plant and dedicated concrete and asphalt parking construction for business owners around Hamilton.Young Kotahi’s Quity NZ Transport Agency..

The new bridge over the North Island Main Trunk will be built alongside existing timber, and both the SH30 bridge approach and the entrance to Kopaki Road will be readjusted for added safety.

In the first phase of the project, the SH30 will be readjusted to move the highway-Kopaki Road intersection further away from the bridge to improve visibility of turning traffic.

Completion of the bridge and new approach road is scheduled for fall 2023, and Matt states that this project is a good example of Downer’s key features that can be brought to any project.

He says his expertise Downer The team can add considerable value to the client’s project. Downer is certified under the ISO44001 Joint Business Relationship Management System to help business partners maximize the value of their collaboration.

For example, when embarking on the Rotokauri Transport Hub project in North Hamilton, the Downer team helped reduce the cost of building a bridge by $ 100,000 by proposing another methodology.

This wasn’t an example of early contractor involvement, it was an opportunity to improve the project once it was designed and ready to start, but Matt says the sooner Downer is involved, the better.

“This gives us the opportunity to add our expertise to the mix and see where we can improve to save our clients time and money,” he says.

Downer has a complete in-house design team that has completed a thorough investigation and design of the Tokoroa Pelican / Dumfries Link Road project currently under construction by the construction team. We also directly control the import of bitumen products for asphalt production through another business called Road Science. This is important because the Marsden Refinery no longer produces bitumen products. These need to be imported.

“Our road science team is currently one of the leading importers of bitumen to New Zealand. Imported bitumen have different technical specifications than locally produced products. We test and try the solution and try it out. We come up with the right product for our client’s project, “explains Matt.

With a main depot in Hamilton, Paeloa, Ngal Awahia and a regional depot in Thirau, Downer Waikato has the ability to cover the entire region with services. All asphalt is produced at the Hamilton Depot, where the surface finishing, construction and contract teams are based. Depots in other regions offer offices and equipment for local contracts for fast and efficient service.

Creating a strong corporate culture is at the heart of the new Downer Waikato construction team. One of the main focal points is the sharing of values.

“There are a lot of honest people on the whole team,” says Downer’s construction manager, Mark Watkins.

“Everyone is not only very ambitious, but also has a high level of integrity and a high level of emotional intelligence.

“We are motivated to bring people with those personality traits into the team. Here we have the skills to apply smart thinking to real-world situations and the emotional needs of difficult situations. You can see that we are building a diverse group of people with both strength and empathy. “

The team consists of an eight-person management team, along with an extensive network of supervisors and project crews throughout Waikato.

Mark states that the company’s spirit of supporting and encouraging employees has helped attract skilled talent and retain long-term team members. It is this that helps the team successfully meet the needs of the region and continue to expand its portfolio of works offered.

“All of our teams are passionate about the future of the region. We are a team that cares for each other and we have great results,” says Mark.
Many of the teams are well known in the local community, and many were born and raised in Waikato.

Mark states that this is important because it provides insight and experience in finding the right solution for a local project.

Mark is a good example. Born in Putāruru, he has been part of the Downer family for nearly 15 years, starting with the team as a contract manager, becoming a senior operations manager and now a construction manager.

He says he enjoys finding the challenges and problems that have driven him throughout his career, including this new role.

“What I enjoy is being able to get to the heart of what the client needs and support it with a working solution.”

Construction supervisor Samuel McHugh states that reflecting Mark’s sentiment, the team shares a commitment to provide an easy, fluffy approach to any project.

He says each team member brings a unique perspective to the project, thanks to a variety of industry experiences. This wealth of skills and creative ideas will help you solve problems and make your clients’ solutions successful.

“We are all very practical. When faced with a challenge, we repel ideas and change together the methodologies that work effectively.”
