Brighton’s new resident, John Osgood, said he was on his way to a nearby pub when he was caught in a traffic jam on his motorcycle.

He passed the crash and saw a person lying on the ground.

“I knew it wasn’t good, but I saw the cops there so they were in good hands. There were so many people that I didn’t want to hang out.” He said.

The road opened at 7:50 pm, according to a police spokesman.

Since January 2000, at least 38 accidents have been recorded in the region, according to accident data from the Wakako Tahi NZ Transport Agency.
