New vessel to extend fishing company’s Southern Ocean reach

Nelson-built fishing vessel Te Runanga has been launched with champagne and speeches.

At a ceremony on Saturday, Westfleet chief executive Craig Boote talked about the importance of the fishing company’s state-of-the-art vessel in helping the company extend its reach.

Te Runanga, a $7m, 26-metre vessel, will help Westfleet extend its reach into the Southern Ocean.

Te Runanga, a $7m, 26-metre vessel, will help Westfleet extend its reach into the Southern Ocean.

Built over two years by Nelson marine engineering firm Aimex, the $7m, 26-metre vessel will head to the Southern Ocean to fish for ling.

Boote praised the quality of the construction as up to the best international standards.

He said the vessel was destined to be at sea for 280-290 days a year, bringing in high-quality fish. The fish would have full traceability through barcodes, so a high-end restaurant in New York or Hong Kong would be able to see where the fish were caught.

Westfleet is part owned by Sealord, in a partnership dating back to 2007 when Boote bought the company from a fishing co-operative, and quickly teamed up with the seafood company.

Today, the businesses are complementary, with Westfleet concentrating on inshore fishing, and Sealord on deep water fishing.

Since Westfleet’s beginnings, it has grown from one boat and a 700-tonne quota, to six vessels and a quota of more than 4500 tonnes.

Named for the West Coast town where Boote grew up, Te Runanga will be based in Greymouth.
