When asked how quickly LDV can meet that demand, Bayliss replied today: “September and fourth quarter production is ramping up and we hope to deliver most pre-orders by 2022.

“At this stage, the order bank is just over 500. However, more orders have come in since today’s media announcement and a VIP customer flyer has gone out.

“While we expect to be able to deliver all units ordered so far this year, it is more likely that all future orders at this point will be delivered in 2023.”

Interest and orders have come from every sector of society,” with private buyers, business owners, merchants, government departments and local agencies all eager to reduce their carbon footprint and drive an electric ute.

“Now that we can offer a zero-emission vehicle that can meet the needs of most buyers who have previously purchased diesel and petrol vehicles, we know we have a winner on our hands.”

The technical element of the electric consists of an 88.5 kW/h battery that powers a permanent magnet electric motor that drives the rear wheels, which is suspended under the aft deck.

GLMD cites a potential for a range of 325 km, which is based on the WLTP test regime.

The ute’s electric motor develops 130 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque. That is considerably less than the 160 kW/480 Nm offered by the T60 turbo diesel, as does the maximum braked towing capacity – 1500 kg versus 3000 kg/750 kg unbraked.

The dimensions of the box are identical to those of the diesel, but GLM does not mention a payload. The turbo diesel is a one-ton ute.

The spec for the electric actually seems to match that for the diesel Luxury, the most expensive of the four diesel models with a $50,588 sticker.

It includes what GLMD says is a “comprehensive range of safety equipment,” a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 17-inch alloy wheels, superior quality leather seats and a 220V power outlet. GLMD says this will come in handy for merchants who can plug in power drills and other tools when they’re not connected to the power grid.

New Zealand is cited as one of the first right-hand drive markets for the model.
