According to police, the incident was the latest mass shooting in the United States and occurred at the FedEx Operations Center near Indianapolis International Airport in Indiana after 11:00 pm local time on Thursday night.

Craig McCart, deputy chief of the Indianapolis police, said at a news conference that it lasted only a few minutes and was already over by the time police responded to the scene.

“The suspect came to the facility, got out of the car when he got there, and immediately started random shooting outside the facility,” he said.

“There is no conflict or controversy. He seemed to start shooting randomly,” he added.

Witnesses described the chaotic attack as the shooters fired in the parking lot before entering the facility, continued shooting, and left victims inside and outside the building. The officer found the suspect dead in a gunshot wound that was apparently self-harming.

FBI Indianapolis special agent for Paul Keenan said it would be “premature to guess” about the shooter’s motives.

At a press conference, city officials said the motive had not yet been established and that the motive might never be determined.

“I don’t know exactly why this happened, but I’ll do my best,” said police chief Randall Taylor.
