Witnesses say they saw a group of children being chased by police chasing western Auckland all night at high speed.

The vehicle involved was seen driving on the other side of the northwest highway near Te Atatu and eventually stopped on the road south of Te Atatu after 1:30 am.

The car suffered heavy tire damage and was driven on the rim.

“The car didn’t have a rim and was running on the rim,” the witness told Herald.

“It passed under the Te Atatu Bridge on the freeway and turned in the wrong direction on the highway ramp. It missed me,” he said.

The police were contacted for more information.

Witnesses said several police cars were chasing the cars involved, and police eagle helicopters were also hovering overhead at the time.

He then found at least six young men detained by police on the streets of Te Atatu.
