Dodi Weir’s former teammate vows to continue MND fundraiser

Oddy Weir’s 1988 school teammates to continue fundraising for motor neuron disease (MND) research following the late rugby union star’s memorable 55-mile challenge completion I swore

It has so far raised almost £40,000 for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which was launched by the sportsman in 2017.

Weir, who capped 61 caps for Scotland, died in November after a six-year battle with the MND.

Following the challenge, the men were cheered at a full house in a special half-time appearance at Murrayfield during Scotland’s Six Nations victory over Italy on 18 March.

The players were joined in a fundraiser by 1988 Tour coaches Rob Moffat and Peter Gallagher.

1988 Tour captain and Doddie 88 Challenge leader Gary Kenhard said:

“We had incredible support from Borders to Murrayfield. The atmosphere against Italy was special.

“There is tremendous spirit in rugby and the combined efforts of teams and the generosity of public support demonstrate the connection and compassion that sport creates.

“The Doddie 88 Challenge has not only raised awareness of MND, it has also raised significant funding for the MyName’5 Doddie Foundation to help research this deadly disease.

“This will not be the last Doddie 88 venture as we continue to support MND’s cause.

On behalf of the team, I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support and generosity.”

Nicole, meanwhile, said the fundraiser was an “amazing experience”, adding:

friendship It takes many forms, but one definition of true friendship is that you can go years without seeing someone, but when you do, you pick it up like it was yesterday.

“That was what the Dodi 88 Boys had. I call it teamship.

“It goes far beyond teamwork and camaraderie, it’s a true bond that lasts forever. The memories of Dodi brought us back together.

Mr Weir was the star of a successful five-week tour in New Zealand, scoring a match-winning try in a 14–12 victory over Wellington Schools.
