Schools in New York City were temporarily blocked by a federal appeals judge from imposing vaccination obligations on teachers and other workers a few days before it went into effect.
Workers’ missions to the largest school system in the United States have been set to take effect on Monday.
Late Friday, a judge in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals granted a temporary injunction and quickly introduced the case to a committee of three judges.
Daniel Filson, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education, said authorities are calling for a quick solution next week.
“We are confident that the vaccine obligations will continue to be met after all the facts have been presented, because of the level of protection appropriate for students and staff,” Filson said.
The New York Post reportedly sent an email to the principal on Saturday morning saying, “We should continue to prepare for the possibility that the vaccine obligation will come into effect later in the week.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in August that approximately 148,000 school staff would need to receive at least the first Covid-19 vaccination by September 27. This policy is intended for teachers and other staff, such as custodians and cafeteria workers.
This is an immunization obligation without the first test option for a wide group of urban workers in the most populous cities in the United States. And it reflects similar state-wide obligations to hospital and nursing home workers due to take effect on Monday.
As of Friday, 82% of department employees were vaccinated, including 88% of teachers. Most school workers are vaccinated, but unions representing principals and teachers could run out of the school system for one million students to as many as 10,000 teachers along with other staff. I warned you.
De Blasio resisted the call to postpone the mission, claiming the city was ready.
“We had been planning all the time,” the Democratic Party said in a radio interview on Friday. “We have a lot of alternatives. A lot will happen from now to Monday, but beyond that, even if you need thousands, you’ll have thousands.”
