The government is working on the Northern Pathway, and Transport Minister Michael Wood announced today that another structure for walking and cycling along the Auckland Harbor Bridge is desirable.
After geoengineering research and testing, it was determined that it was impossible to construct a structure connecting to the Auckland Harbor Bridge.
“The New Zealand Upgrade Program (NZUP) is helping our economy recover, but as COVID-19 increases construction costs globally and requires further reductions in emissions, rail, public transport, Walking and cycling, “said Michael Wood.
“We need this transport connection to move forward, but it is technically impossible to install it on an existing bridge without endangering the entire structure.
“Standalone construction is the safest option to create a good tourism infrastructure as well as provide commuters with walking and biking options.
“We have seen similar connections in major international cities around the world and how well Te Ala y Witi – Light Pass is being used. The Northern Pathway is a draw for larger tourists. It can be a card.
“The Northern Pathway is the missing link of Auckland’s walking and cycling network, which will eventually allow Oaklanders to walk or cycle across the harbor. Do it right and it’s a permanent part of the infrastructure. It is important to make sure that there is and provide an alternative means of transportation. Cross the harbor and relieve Auckland road congestion.
“In the meantime, Waka Kotahi will continue to work on ways to provide safe, temporary testing of lane use for cyclists and pedestrians at the existing Harbor Bridge.
“Work continues with plans for additional Waitemata Harbor Crossing. The first business case ended last year, with work on the expansion of the Northern Busway and the development of additional intersections, including high-speed transportation.
“Given that the next intersection is likely to be a tunnel, it is not safe to have walking and cycling links in some of them, so we need to build a Northern Pathway.
“Auckland wouldn’t reach its potential without it.
“Most projects remain unchanged, but further announcements on other NZUP projects will be made later today with the Minister of Infrastructure,” said Michael Wood.

The original plan assumed that the proposed walking and cycling facility could be installed on the existing Auckland Harbor Bridge. However, design development, geoengineering research and testing have determined that this is not possible. Existing piers cannot accommodate the additional weight without significant changes to accommodate the increased load that carries the additional risk to the bridge.
Alternative options were considered, including gondola, dedicated ferry or bus services, use of existing lanes, walking, cycling, and a separate multimodal construction for public transport. The recommended solution is a full-height independent bridge option. It offers 24/7 dedicated cross-harbor connectivity, high-level amenities for users, and the ability to meet projected demand, providing a long-term solution for best performance. ..
The solution takes approximately five years to operate (including consent and design and development) and is estimated to cost $ 785 million. This includes $ 100 million in the land section.
