Becoming part of Top Gun: Maverick was no easy task. De cast fan Maverick had to be willing and able to go through a comprehensive flight training, and in all likelihood that work was extensive and by no means easy. For Miles Teller, it was an even rougher experience than most, but he played it off and got the best reaction ever from Tom Cruise.
In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers, Miles Teller turns out to be in pretty bad shape after his first outing in a jet. He felt sick, had hives all over his body, and more. A blood test revealed that he had wild things like flame retardant and actual jet fuel in his blood. He told Tom Cruise this in what Teller probably thought was the coolest way possible, but he may have gotten an even cooler response from Cruise. Counter declares …
To be honest, Tom Cruise was probably born with jet fuel in his blood. Cruise is not only ready to perform the vast majority of its own practical stuntshe insists. Tom Cruise is known for branding insurance companies that would not insure a film production for some wild thing he wanted. There must be something running through Tom Cruise’s ears that prepares him like most to deal with such extreme situations. Jet fuel is as good an explanation as any. For years before Top Gun: Maverick was ever a real project, the one thing that Cruise liked was that if and when the movie happened, real jets would be deployed.
It seems certain that Miles Teller has recovered from having literal jet fuel in his veins. Maybe that’s something that normally happens when you’re around jets? Teller says he has very sensitive skin, but I’m not sure one’s skin will be perfectly fine if you have flame retardant and jet fuel in your body. He ended up in good enough shape for Counter to be the source of a viral dance frenzy.
For what it’s worth, it’s sure the sacrifice was worth it. Top Gun: Maverick is a massive box office hit at a time when other films, like the latest Pixar movie, are obviously difficult. Those practical action sequences using real jets get a great deal of credit for the success of the film.
