Midjourney ends free trial amid controversy over fake images

Midjourney, an artificial intelligence (AI) image generation program, has discontinued its free trial after a series of fake images, including one of Pope Francis, went viral.

Founder David Holz announced on the Discord channel:

The creator of the image, Pablo Xavier, posted the image on a Facebook group called AI Art Universe and then on Reddit, after which it went viral.

“I was just blown away,” he told Buzzfeed News. “I didn’t want to explode like that.”

Holz admitted he wasn’t sure how to manage the superior features of the tools the company developed. At this point, the CEO said the company could go “totally Disney or totally Wild West” when it comes to image realism.
