Putin congratulates China’s Xi on unprecedented third term
“The outcome of the party congress fully confirms your high political authority and the solidarity of the party you lead,” Putin told Xi, according to the Kremlin website.
Xi and Putin signed a “no limits” partnership agreement in February, three weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Since then, China has been cautious, criticizing Western sanctions against Russia, but not endorsing or supporting military operations.
Last month, Putin said he understood President Xi Jinping’s “questions and concerns” about the situation in Ukraine.
Russia is increasingly viewing China, which faces Western sanctions and isolation, as an important geopolitical and economic partner, and Putin is seeking to cultivate a warm personal relationship with Xi.
The Russian president said he believed Xi’s reappointment would “strengthen China’s position on the international stage” and help the country realize its enormous domestic investment and development plans.
