The lawyer was suspended for 12 months due to a 6-day secret relationship with the prisoner.
Debbie Paulson Wilson was also ordered by a disciplinary court of lawyers and real estate lawyers to pay $ 7,000. He said the “brief but secret” relationship was at the serious end of the scope of illegal activity.
Wilson was hired as a barrister and met with prisoners to discuss possible appeals.
She brought the details of the meeting back to her boss. The boss determined that there was no reason for the appeal because there was no fresh evidence.
The employer advised Wilson to advise the prisoner that he could no longer help him.
Wilson and the prisoner continued a six-day dialogue over the phone and Instagram, and at some point Wilson tricked prison authorities into accepting the “social contact” of the phone with the prisoner under the pseudonym “Lucy Pans.” I assumed.
The prisoner also demanded that Wilson’s phone number be approved as a legal contact, but Wilson mistakenly told prison authorities that she was investigating the prisoner’s complaint and her number was approved. I agreed.
In a recorded phone call, the two discussed the possibility of sexual contact and Wilson’s possibility of bringing chocolate and a pen for prisoners at the next meeting.
They also discussed with Wilson’s employer plans to create an opportunity for her to visit the prison again, pretending that a fellow prisoner would need to meet a lawyer in person.
“We do not hesitate to declare this act at the serious end of the scope of cheating,” the referee said.
Prison officials provided reports of these conversations to Wilson’s employer, who was suspended and subsequently dismissed for serious misconduct.
Wilson insisted on a three-month suspension, and the Standards Commission called for a 12-month suspension.
The referee chose the latter and ordered her to pay the Standards Commission $ 7,000.
