Wednesday, January 14, 2015 (HealthDay News)-A new study suggests that sedentary tendencies can be twice as deadly as obesity.
However, British researchers added that even a small amount of exercise (for example, a 20-minute walk every day) is enough to reduce the risk of premature death by as much as 30%.
Wolf Ekelund, Principal Investigator and Principal Investigator, Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge Medical Research Council, said:
The reduced risk was seen in people of normal weight, overweight, and obesity, according to Ekelund. “We estimated that eradicating the physical inactivity of the population could reduce the number of deaths by a factor of two if obesity was eradicated,” he said.
From a public health perspective, raising the level of physical activity is as important as lowering the level of obesity-perhaps more, he added.

For this study, Ekelund and his colleagues collected data from 334,000 men and women. They measured height, weight, waist circumference, and self-reported levels of physical activity during an average of 12 years of follow-up.
Ekelund’s group found that a modest amount of physical activity was the key to reducing the chances of premature death compared to inactivity.
Researchers estimated that exercising to burn 90 to 110 calories a day could reduce the risk of premature death by 16 to 30 percent. They said that the effects of moderate exercise were greatest among people of normal weight, but even those who were overweight or obese saw benefits.
Using the latest data on deaths in Europe, Ekelund’s team estimated that 337,000 of the 9.2 million deaths of men and women in Europe were associated with obesity. However, twice that number of deaths may be associated with lack of exercise.
