A teenager died last night in an accident at a skate park in central Auckland.

Around 9:15 pm on Sunday, emergency services rushed to Victoria Park and found a 17-year-old boy injured.

A police spokesperson said he was taken to hospital in serious condition but died shortly after.

The death was sent to the coroner.

In 2018, the death of a skateboarder led to the installation of razor wire to stop people from sliding down the wall on their skateboards.

Pitiphong Sangsirichat, 25, Severely injured at Victoria Park Skate Plaza January 27, when he fell from the top of the structure.

He died in hospital two days later.

The wire was intended to stop people from climbing to the top who would slide down the entire wall and onto the ramp.

Auckland City Council Community Facilities General Manager Rod Sheridan said after his death, City Council worked with Transport New Zealand to prevent access to the top of the building.

This included having security guards on site.
