The first Islamic Mindfulness App of its kind won the highest award at AUT’s entrepreneurial challenge, the X Challenge. Created by former AUT student Mohd Akhtaar, Mindful Muslim has won over $ 20,000 in prize money for his ideas and defeated 187 other participants.
Mohd has created an app that helps fellow Islamic people improve their emotional well-being and mental health through Islamic stories told in the form of guided talkdowns at bedtime.
The app is already well established at the time of the X Challenge and has over 10,000 memberships per month. In addition, it received a rating of 4.9 (out of 5) from the Google Play store and was well received by users.
The idea of guided sleep talkdown wasn’t new in general, but Mohd identified market gaps through his long working experience as director of a digital marketing agency. “I found it difficult to relax and looked for a useful app. The mindfulness apps that already exist didn’t fit into Islamic principles, so look at the market gaps and create your own. I did, “he says.
While demonstrating great commercial success, the way apps resonate with users is especially important for Mohd. “All parts of the feedback make a lot of sense to me. Knowing that I can have a small impact or contribution to the world gives me the fuel I need to keep going. “I will,” he commented.
Mohd has also been involved in AUT entrepreneurial programs such as Co. Starters and X Challenge as a student, so he nods time at AUT, which is very important in startup development and management skills. Through these programs, he contacted partner mentors such as Flying Kiwi Angel’s Rudi Bublitz and Well Revolution co-founder Freyne Cooke.
By spending time on these AUT entrepreneurship programs, Mohd and his Mindful Muslim app ideas were put in front of real investors like entrepreneur Derek Handley. He made a considerable investment in the development of the app.
Mohd’s is now able to work full-time with the app and will soon expand to other markets such as the UK and US.
The app is currently available for Android devices and will soon be available for iOS.
