The special jury investigating Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election has subpoenaed several of the former US president’s legal advisers and political allies.
Court documents show the Fulton County Special Jury issued subpoenas to members of the Trump campaign legal team, including Rudy Giulianiand Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina.
The grand jury is also seeking information from conservative attorneys John Eastman, Cleta Mitchell, Kenneth Chesebro and Jenna Ellis. Mitchell participated in the phone call between Trump and Brad Raffensperger, Republican Secretary of State Georgiathat sparked the grand jury investigation.
On Jan. 2, 2021, Trump called Raffensperger and challenged him to “find” enough votes to reverse Biden’s victory in Georgia. Raffensperger refused, and the appeal, which quickly became public, caused a great outcry.
Fulton District Attorney Fani Willis launched the criminal investigation weeks after the call was leaked, and Raffensperger testified before the grand jury Last month.
The latest round of subpoenas in the investigation shows the grand jury is seeking additional information about efforts by Trump allies to interfere in Georgia’s findings.
In the weeks following the 2020 election, Giuliani repeatedly testified before Georgia lawmakers about his unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud that hurt the state’s results. Graham also reported Days after the 2020 election, he reached out to Raffensperger, urging him whether he could reject all mailed ballots cast in counties with a higher proportion of mismatched signatures on ballots. (Graham has disputed this claim.)
The grand jury will continue to gather information about attempts by Trump and his allies to interfere in Georgia’s election results, and the group will then present a report on whether the former president or any of his associates should be prosecuted for their efforts. Willis will make the final decision to press charges in this case.
The latest development comes as the House of Representatives investigating the Jan. 6 riot took a closer look at Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. Testifying publicly before the committee last month, Raffensperger recounted how his office investigated a number of Trump’s election conspiracy theories and found no evidence to back them.
“The numbers are the numbers,” Raffensperger told the committee. “The numbers don’t lie.”
