Talent in the art of football is not the only skill that Hannah Wilkinson’s Football’s Fern has in her repertoire.

The New Zealand striker painted a mural on the walls of Eden Park to honor the Women’s Cricket, Rugby and Soccer World Cups that will be hosted and will be hosted there for the next two years.

Wilkinson says the World Cups are an opportunity for athletes to compete on higher platforms.

“The biggest misconception about women’s sport is that no one watches it. Well, no one has ever been able to watch it because we tend to prioritize television broadcasting and the promotion of men’s sports.”

For the mural, Wilkinson combined elements of native birds, a beautiful mongoose and a beautiful daughter that unfolds to create a silver fern, symbolizing the development of our strong national athletes.

“Our athletes and our national identities are tied with a kirituhi-style ribbon, which I’m not Maori,” he said. “The elements of this design are inspired by the unique kōwhaiwhai art of Aotearoa New Zealand.”

Growing up in Whangārei and learning from her siblings, Wilkinson played rugby and cricket, but her interest was drawn to football – with plenty of art and music on the sidelines. Her finishing skills have made Wilkinson one of New Zealand’s most accomplished players.

Eden Park CEO Nick Saunter had the idea for the artwork to highlight the three facts and Wilkinson wanted to help her after seeing her artistic talent online. Within 24 hours of the stadium, he received a plan from her and two weeks later the work was completed.

Saunter believes that “it is the epitome of the stadium – it is the creativity of music, arts, culture and sports”.

Leaving her legacy in such a prominent place, Wilkinson hopes she can continue to inspire.

“Children – men or women – are looking for role models and the fact that we can inspire between the sexes is fantastic,” he said. “I would say to any young girls out there, just keep pushing and do what you love and never give up.”
