Former Catholic school principal is deputy mayor of Palmy

Palmerston North’s new deputy mayor, Debi Marshall Robb, is a former Catholic school principal.

Among her many leadership roles in education, she is the former principal of Hato Paola Catholic Maori Boys’ College and Masterton Chanel College.

Mayor Grant Smith sees a bright future for Marshall Robb (Rangitāne and Ngāti Rangi), who are fluent in New Zealand’s three official languages: English, Teleo and New Zealand Sign Language.

Despite being a first-term alderman, Smith says the former Catholic school principal will bring mana to the role of deputy mayor.

“Devi’s appointment is a true milestone for Palmerston North. It is the first time in three years that our city has had a Māori councilor and the first time that we have Wahine Māori as Deputy Mayor. .”

Smith said Marshall Robb’s previous leadership and governance experience will be an asset as Principal, chairing the NZ National Teachers Council.

“She has a passion for education and is passionate about bringing people together and strengthening communities.

A mother of four, she is currently Acting Head of Maori at Palmerston North Boys High School.

Marshall Robb says that the 133 peoples represented in Palmerston North are authentic tangas.

Asked what she hopes to achieve in the next three years, she said that looking back, she could see that people were not afraid of “the Maori thing” and that the treaty partnership had benefited everyone. says he wants it.

All councilors who voted in the election were officially welcomed in Powiri early last Wednesday evening at Te Marae o Hiné.

Following that ceremony, the councilors took the oath of office and the first council meeting was held in the council chamber.

Marshall Robb’s appearance on the council floor at the new council swearing-in ceremony was personally poignant. Her mother was a city councilor from 1989 until she was in 1995.

“I know my late mother, Yvonne Marshall, is looking down and smiling as I follow in her footsteps,” says Marshall Robb.
