Hipkins received by Prince William in Windsor

Ahead of Charles III’s coronation, Prince William welcomed Prime Minister Chris Hipkins.

After their meeting in Windsor was captured by a photographer, their photos were shared on Twitter and Instagram, the official social media accounts of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The Prince and Hipkins are shown talking to each other in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.

The image included the caption, “It’s an honor to welcome New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins to Windsor this afternoon.”

Hipkins told RNZ’s Prince William that he gifted his children with a Paddington Bear plush toy and a book. The prime minister gave each of his children the Prince of Wales his pounamu.

The meeting came after Hipkins confirmed he had secured a meeting with the King when he was in London for his coronation this weekend.

He will also meet with British Prime Minister Rishi Snak at 10 Downing Street during his visit.

Before departing New Zealand earlier this week, he was asked if he was a monarchist or a republican, and Hipkins said he already said the latter.

But I didn’t think we were debating whether we should become a republic if he won another term.

He told the media that he saw it as a distraction, not a priority at the moment, given the factors currently affecting people in New Zealand.

“At this point, I’m not particularly interested in pushing that argument on New Zealanders.”

Hipkins traveled with a delegation that included Governor General Cindy Keylo, opposition leader Chris Luxon, British High Commissioner to New Zealand Phil Gough and former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, who represented the Knights of New Zealand. I’m here.
