NASA has been preparing for human exploration of Mars for decades, and the Martian Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, or the experiment known as MOXIE, is oxygen for propellant and breathing from the Martian atmosphere. We have already shown some promising attempts to generate. MOXIE works by separating an oxygen atom from a carbon dioxide molecule that is composed of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Manufactured nanomaterials can be used in a variety of areas of the space industry, including battery and ultracapacitor technology, conductive and reinforced coatings, polymer formulations, and water filters. Mars has a thin atmosphere with less than one-hundredth of the Earth’s surface pressure. In addition, it is 96% carbon dioxide with only about 0.1% oxygen. For comparison, the Earth’s atmosphere is 21% oxygen. UP Catalyst has developed a new way to use both by-products in a sustainable way.
