Covid-19 outbreak Omicron: the case numbers today, will there be more than 1000 people in the hospital today?

New Zeland

March 16, 2022 Vaccinated Australians will be able to come to New Zealand without isolation from 11:59 pm on April 12. Fully vaccinated travelers from visa-free countries will be able to enter the country from 11:59 pm on May 2nd.

The number of hospitals could exceed 1,000 today as the Omicron outbreak spreads across the North Island.

The Ministry of Health will release a statement today at 1pm after Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins withdrew from the daily press conference at the last minute after catching Covid-19 himself.

Hipkins had already been in solitary confinement for seven days after one of his sons tested positive for Covid-19 last week and just as his time was up, Hipkins himself took him.

Yesterday there were 21,616 cases of Covid in the community and a record of 960 patients hospitalized to fight the virus. Two other people – one in southern DHB and one in Lakes DHB – also died from the virus. They were both over 70 years old.

The average age of people currently hospitalized with Covid-19 is 58.

But actual case numbers could be much higher as health officials believe the tests are detecting only half of the total positive Covid-19 cases in Auckland and Northland.

The number of ICU or ICU beds is also starting to fill across the country with about 60 percent of the 300 ICU and highly addictive unit beds occupied in the country so far.

Less than 10% of total ICU and ICU beds were occupied by Covid positive people and at the time it wasn’t sure if any of them were ventilated, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said yesterday. .

On a daily basis, between 10 and 20% of the fans were in use, so there was a lot of capacity.

Meanwhile, the number of cases is on the rise in other parts of the country, including Wellington.

Bloomfield confirmed that the Wellington outbreak appeared to be still on the rise, with 1,584 cases reported yesterday.

It could be between 3,000-5,000 cases a day for a few weeks and even months and in that context, it might be worth continuing to track contacts, he said.

Yesterday, both Gisborne and Canterbury also recorded the highest number of cases so far in the outbreak.

Meanwhile, people are still being urged to receive a boost with Bloomfield, confirming that only 16% of people admitted to Auckland hospitals over a two-week period were augmented.

There was interest in the length of time people would have to wait if they have Covid and want to get vaccinated – and that’s three months.
