Kiwi students took a step closer to learning about the history of Aotearoa New Zealand at school after consultation feedback was announced and the final curriculum was dated.

In September 2019, Hon Chris Hipkins announced that the history of Aotearoa in New Zealand will be taught in all schools and clubs from 2022. This is in response to Kiwi’s growing call for more information about our own history and identity.

The Ministry of Education tested the draft content of the New Zealand curriculum and the Te Marautanga o Aotearoa curriculum from February 3 to May 31, 2021. The tests were conducted in school and warehouse staff rooms, classrooms, and the general public. Feedback was invited through a survey or general submission.

MacGregor-Reid said MOE plans to release the final TeTakangao TeWā and Aotearoa New Zealand historical curriculum content in October 2021.
