Chris Cairns underwent successful surgery after being diagnosed with cancer

Former Black Caps star Chris Cairns has successfully undergone surgery after being diagnosed with bowel cancer, which came months after a life-threatening heart attack.

Cairns posted an update on his Instagram account,

“Thank you for all the messages and wishes, I appreciate it very much. The surgery was successful and I am out of the ICU and I feel good. A large team of surgeons, doctors and nurses here are taking care of me. I will take them comfortably here for the next while, as recover.

Cairns’s heart attack last year resulted in an aortic dissection or rupture of the inner layer of the body’s main artery and the 51-year-old had to undergo emergency surgery at the time.

However, during the rescue operation, Cairns suffered a stroke in the spine, which paralyzed both of his legs.

Cairns recovered from a rehabilitation unit at the University of Canberra in Australia and shared his recovery journey through his social media channels.

Last month, Cairns revealed that he had suffered another serious blow to his health while battling bowel cancer after a routine checkup.

“I was told yesterday I had bowel cancer – a big shock and not what I expected,” Cairns posted on social media.

“So as I prepare for another round of conversations with surgeons and specialists, I keep remembering how lucky I am to be here in the first place; and how blessed I am to have everything I do in my life.

“It wasn’t all bad this week either, I managed to do some kids’ sport and celebrate Noah’s birthday at home.

“Another race is ahead, but we hope that this race will be fast and will end in the first round.”
