“Meaningful films actually help people deal with the challenges of their lives and help them pursue more important goals,” said Lord Columbus, a graduate student in communications at Ohio State University. Author Jared Ott said.
Co-author Michael Slater, a professor of communications, says that many studies have investigated people’s reactions to films and film clips in the laboratory. It was designed to see how movies affect people in the real world.
“We wanted to know how people experience these films in their daily lives,” Slater said.
For this study, researchers have created two lists of 20 Hollywood movies that have been highly acclaimed since 1985.
One included movies such as “Hotel Rwanda,” “Schindler’s List,” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” These explain that the movie site IMDb is inspiring, inspiring, and meaningful.
Other films included what researchers described as “meaningless” fares, such as “Ratatouille,” “Fight Club,” and “Pulp Fiction.”
Almost 1,100 adults were recruited online, received one of the lists and reported which movie they watched. The researchers were then asked to complete a survey on one of these randomly selected films.
Those who remembered a meaningful movie tended to say that the movie helped them understand the difficulties of life more than others. Meaningful films are also likely to help viewers embrace the human condition, researchers said.
Participants who recalled meaningful films also tended to say that films motivated them to become better people, do good things for others, and pursue what really matters in life. did.
An important element of these films was their inspiration. happiness And sadness, their emotional range, and their ability to uplift and inspire people by seeing them.
Researchers have said that it is still possible to find meaning in fares that mean something more interesting than exciting.
Participants will see “Achievement and Personal Success”, “Love and” from the 16 lists that appear in the movie. Intimacy“And” courage and courage. “
“When I remembered a movie that focused on values that were important to me, I felt that people were better able to understand the difficulties of their lives,” Slater said. “It happened even when the movie was classified as one of the less meaningful movies.”
The findings were recently published online in the journal Media and society..
According to Otto, the findings suggest why some people consider movies more than entertainment.
“Some movies may help people cope with difficult times in life and grow,” he said. “And people may recognize this effect years after watching a particular movie.”
