New Zealand’s best-selling car, the Ford Ranger ute, could cost up to $ 4,660 more from next year under government clean car import standards.
That’s the number Ford’s Boffin came up with, squeezing the gradual impact of tailpipe emissions taxes on the prices of its cars and commercials.
Ford’s $ 4,660 estimate is the worst-case scenario for a 4WD double cab ranger wildtrack, a premium model with a 3.2-liter single-turbo diesel engine.
Prices start at $ 75,490 recommended. The penalty for engine C02 emissions of 233 gr / km raises the cost of the vehicle to over $ 80,000.
Based on Ford’s calculations, a Wildtrak with similar specs and price, equipped with an optional 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel, emits 212 gr / km and is subject to an emission tax of approximately $ 3000.
The highest-priced ranger, the 2.0-liter 4WD Raptor, will also be penalized at around $ 3,000, pushing retail prices from $ 85,490 to $ 88,490.
The cheapest model with a ranger lineup of 3.2-liter engines will be penalized at $ 1090, according to Ford’s total.
At the moment, the company’s managing director, Simon Rutherford, says the ranger registration is split between 3.2-liter and 2.0-liter engines at about 50:50. From now on, he says, “We will manage the mix for the bi-turbo model.”
Ford, like all New Zealand car dealers, has yet to learn exactly from the government how emission taxes work, for example, how politicians want to pay.
Meanwhile, Ford has landed the latest additions to its SUV fleet to help balance the book on tailpipe emissions. PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) escape equipped with a gas electric motor for the first time as a midsize car.
Buyers can choose between an entry-level base and a premium ST line (pictured above) when the first 30 shipments arrive from Europe. Currently, there are only nine examples in the country, each of which is used as a demonstrator.
“We asked for more, but we haven’t got an answer yet,” says Rutherford. “The system has 90 orders (for PHEV Escape) and we will continue to add them.”
The base model costs $ 60,990 and the well-equipped St-Line costs $ 66,990. Each is eligible for a $ 5,750 rebate under a government taxpayer-funded scheme to increase the country’s EV fleet to reduce transport emissions.
The parallel PHEV is a combination of a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Duratec gasoline engine and an electric motor that drives only the front wheels. The total output is 167kW at 6250rpm.
The 14.4kWh battery pack can be charged on the move by the regeneration process or through a main power outlet. For example, it takes about 6 hours to charge at home using a 3-point outlet. Charging through the Type 2 unit takes 2-3 hours.
The cruising range of the car when fully charged is 59km, and it will switch to hybrid driving. When the 45-liter gas tank is full, the total cruising range is said to be about 750km.
There are 4 selectable modes (EV Auto, EV Now, EV Later, EV Charge) and 5 selectable drive modes (Normal, ECO, Sport, Slippery, Deep Snow / Sand).
