September 12, 2014-Several autoimmune disorders are associated and may even be involved in their development. Eating disorders, New research suggests.
In a large survey of more than 2,000 Finns Eating disordersResearchers have found that they are more likely to suffer from autoimmune disorders than healthy people.
With autoimmune disease, the immune system accidentally attacks and destroys healthy cells in the body.
“I was amazed at the strong link found between autoimmune disorders and eating disorders,” said Anu Raevuori, MD, MD, lead author of the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Tell Medscape Medical News.
The immune system appears to contribute to the problem of onset and persistence of eating disorders, at least in this group of patients, the researchers say.

Details of the study
Each patient was then compared to four healthy, age- and gender-matched individuals. Data on 30 autoimmune disorders from discharge registrations from 1969 to 2010 were also analyzed.
The results showed that 8.9% of people with eating disorders and 5.4% of healthy people were diagnosed with at least one autoimmune disorder by the end of follow-up.
For unknown reasons, autoimmune disorders were more common in men Bulimia More neurotic than women with disabilities.
“We don’t want to downplay the psychological aspects of these disorders, which definitely play an important role,” Raevuori said. Instead, the findings lead to the question of what is psychological and what is biological, and “and how separable they are.”
