Back to school – keep everyone safe

The next few weeks will be the time for families to prepare Tamariki for returning to school.

“Everyone has a role to play in road safety, especially around schools,” said Superintendent Steve Greeley, director of the National Highway Police Center.

“We strongly advise drivers to exercise extra caution and keep in mind that children can be very unpredictable.

“We need to do everything we can to protect children walking and biking to school, some of them for the first time.”

There are several important points to keep in mind when addressing road safety. Police recommend that parents take time to talk with their children about keeping the roads safe.

“The time a child goes to school for the first time can be a memorable time for families. It’s worth practicing with them.

“If you’re taking the kids to school, be careful to look left and right for cars,” says Supt Greally.

Police are also reminding drivers about their behavior near schools and around school buses. Remember that the speed limit is 20km/h for him when passing a stopped school bus and he must slow down to less than 30km/h when passing the school.

With the start of the new school year, the family’s usual morning routine is out of sync. Therefore, it is advisable to allow enough time for school drop-off and pick-up so that you can pay full attention to the road without rushing.
