After traveling 14 kilometers on the other side of the road, the car hit a barrier and collided with an oncoming vehicle, police said.

Two crashes on the Tauranga Eastern Rink have left one critically injured. Sunlive reported.

At 9:30 pm Thursday, police alerted a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Paengaroa’s Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road.

A police spokesperson said, “The driver entered the westbound lane at the Domain Road roundabout, traveled about 14 kilometers east, then lost control and is believed to have collided with a wire barrier.

“Shortly after, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle and the driver was seriously injured and had to be rescued by an ambulance.

“The suspected driver of the offending vehicle was detained at the scene.”

A serious crash unit is investigating, according to police, and an investigation is ongoing, SunLive reports.

The collision closed the highway overnight and reopened around 4am.
