All Blacks star Jordy Barrett re-signs with New Zealand Rugby until 2025

All Blacks backline regular Jordy Barrett has signed a new deal with the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) that will keep him in the capital until the end of 2025.

Taranaki’s representatives are grateful to have been able to extend their contract with the Hurricanes and are honored to be able to wear Swirl again.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to live and play rugby in New Zealand. It is a dream I have had since I was a child,” said Barrett.

“The Hurricanes franchise feels very well positioned at the moment and the All Blacks are on their way to something special.”

All Blacks head coach Ian Foster is “delighted to re-sign Jordy”.

“He has become a big part of our long-term plans. His commitment to New Zealand through 2025 is great news.”

Hurricanes head coach Jason Holland is thrilled to secure such great talent as the Hurricanes prepare for the 2023 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season.

“It’s great to see Jordy’s commitment to the cane. He’s grown into a key leader for our group on and off the field.

He said Barrett “played his best rugby last year as both a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old, and I expect him to do even better in the years to come.”

A useful goalkicker, Barrett further proved his versatility when he started in the All Blacks’ No.12 jersey for the first time in last month’s Bledisloe Cup match against Australia. He is also good at wings and fullbacks.

Taranaki CEO Mike Sandle said: “We are delighted that Jordy has committed his future to New Zealand rugby. I am so proud to call him part of our own. I’m sure it will resonate with all Taranaki fans.

“We value the opportunity for the All Blacks to play for us and would love to see him dash into Yarrow Stadium in amber and black hoops in the future.”

Born into a rugby family, the 25-year-old is one of eight siblings, including fellow All Blacks Boden and Scott. Their father, Kevin “Smiley” Barrett, played 167 games for Taranaki and played for the Hurricanes. The 45-Test All Blacks is proud to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Taranaki head coach Neil Barnes said: “Jordy is still a young man and will get better with time.” I am delighted and I am sure he will make his family and state proud both in and out of the paddock.”

A talented fast bowler in cricket, Barrett was a highly accomplished student at Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth. He chose rugby and studied commerce at Lincoln College in the South.

In 2016, after one season of domestic rugby, Barrett traveled to the Northern Hemisphere as an apprentice with the All Blacks.

The following year, Barrett burst onto the Super Rugby scene, scoring 135 goals in 17 appearances in his debut season before being selected by the All Blacks.
