Three teenagers arrested for ‘killing and stealing precious swans before eating’ | US News
Three teenagers have been arrested in upstate New York on suspicion of stealing, killing and eating a prized swan.
Fay and her four swans were removed from a pond in the village of Manlius outside the city of Syracuse on Saturday, Memorial Day weekend.
Swan was reported missing on Monday and police launched an investigation.
Manlius Police Sergeant Ken Hatter said a civilian found two Cygnets at a store in the nearby town of Salina and called authorities.
A teenage boy who worked at the store confessed to attending the swan nap with two other suspects, police said.
The two remaining swans were found at the original suspect’s home in Syracuse, police added.
However, Sergeant Hatter said the mother swan was eaten after being cooked by the suspect’s aunt.
“The mother swan was eaten,” Manlius Mayor Paul Horror added Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, that’s what they did.”
Since the swan was captured, Faye’s companion, Manny, has been seen swimming around the pond alone.
The three teenagers were arrested Tuesday on charges including theft and criminal mischief related to the disappearance of animals.
Two of the suspects, ages 16 and 17, were released by their parents because they were juveniles.
The third, 18, is awaiting arraignment.
Life goes on for four baby swans
Sergeant Hatter said the young swans will be cared for and returned to the pond in the next few weeks when they are old enough to survive on their own.
For over a decade, Faye and her companion Manny roamed the swans in the ponds of the village of Manlius, hatching and raising swans each spring.
Faye was a “mute swan”, a species not native to North America.

They were introduced as an ornamental species but are considered invasive by wildlife authorities.
Swan hunting is legal in some US states, but not in New York.
Manlius Village has the swan emblem on its website as well as on merchandise such as hats and T-shirts.
“Swans have been part of this village for over 100 years,” Khoror said. “We are known for swans.”
