Sri Lanka’s chances of direct World Cup qualification hinge on crucial Hamilton encounter
Hamilton [New Zealand], 30 March (ANI): Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand 1-0 in a three-game series, the first game being won by the hosts and the second game being a washout. A win for Hamilton would earn him a crucial 10 points in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.
The top eight teams in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings will qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The remaining five teams will participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in June. July 2023.
The Qualifier is a 10-team event featuring the bottom five teams from the Super League, the top three teams from the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, and the top two teams from the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play. – off in Namibia.
Two of these will qualify for the World Cup in India.
The top seven Superleague teams have qualified for the World Cup, while the bottom two, Zimbabwe (65th) and the Netherlands (35th), are certain to qualify.
So the eighth direct spot in the Global Event is a battle between four sides. You can only see it as a spectator.
Sri Lanka are currently in 9th place (81 points) with one more match to go. South Africa (78 points) are one place down with two games left and Ireland (68 points) have three games left.
South Africa will play two games against the Netherlands in the Super League on 31 March and 2 April respectively, while Ireland will host Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series in May. Both teams will be looking to win all of their remaining matchups, topping both the West Indies and Sri Lanka, each with 98 points, to secure a direct entry.
For the Lions, Friday’s loss means they remain behind the West Indies in the Super League standings regardless of other results. Should move to Africa in May.
So, even if a direct spot isn’t guaranteed, a win would keep Rankan’s hopes up for now.
Having dominated their first leg in Auckland, New Zealand will know that the side led by Dasun Shanaka has a big challenge ahead of them. (Ani)
