By Sergeant Tony Colby, Rotorua CIB.

Bay of Plenty police investigating the attempted murder of Rotorua man Karl Anders Nyman in 2002 have asked others for information about who wanted Nyman dead. there is

We have reopened our investigation into this historic attempted murder. The principal offender, Warren Uata Kiwi, was convicted in 2019, but we know there are others involved who have not been charged.

A years-long police investigation has revealed that Warren Kiwi, now 62, of Tauranga, has been charged with attempted murder for “renting a gun” and sentenced to nine years in prison. He was promised a substantial amount of cannabis to shoot Mr. Nyman dead.

The case is still unsolved and police are investigating who was behind the attempted murder plot.

In the early hours of Wednesday 31 July 2002, Mr Kiwi traveled to Rotorua and went to Aspen Place, where Mr Nyman lived at the time, and waited in hiding outside Mr Nyman’s address.

At around 4:15 a.m., Nyman left his home and walked down the driveway to a truck parked on the street. As he reached the pavement, Mr. Kiwi in a balaclava approached him with a rifle.

A fight ensued over control of the rifle, which resulted in Nyman being shot in the arm, falling and injuring his knee.

Nyman eventually seized the rifle and Kiwi fled the scene.

By the time police arrived, Nyman was found injured in the front yard after a scuffle.

Victim Karl Nyman said: “Life has never been the same since the morning of July 2002 and will probably never be the same. I have tried my best to deal with it,” he said.

Police have not released a reason for the attempted murder.

We need people to speak up and tell us what they know and who was involved.

“More and more people have information and have probably seen or heard what happened, but are reluctant to talk to us.

This was a serious incident in which a man nearly died.

“We hope the new details and fresh information will help us get the answers we need to find out who was behind the attempted murder.”

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation should contact police via 105, see file number 020731/0985.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 or online. www.crimestoppers-nz.org
