Val Heaney, 64, was killed in his home in Bromley on April 4 this year while in quarantine with Covid-19. Elliott Ajay Prakash of her border later pleaded guilty.
Today in Christchurch High Court, Judge Cameron Mander sentenced Prakash to life in prison without parole for a minimum of 13 years.
Following the verdict, Val Heaney’s family released a statement.
“This is an incredible tragedy for our family and we will miss our beloved sister, daughter and aunt,” they said.
“We appreciate the efforts of the police.
“We also thank Victim Support NZ for supporting our family.
“We will not be commenting further. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Detective Nicola Reeves said Prakash committed a “horrifying and cowardly attack”.
“I would like to thank the investigative team for their tireless efforts to hold this criminal to account and resolve this case as quickly as possible,” she said.
“I would also like to thank Val’s family for their incredible strength in this tragic situation.
“Val dedicated her life to caring for her daughter Natasha and improving the quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. Her loss is being felt throughout the wider community.”
“Nothing can make up for what happened to Val, but I sincerely hope that today’s results bring some closure to them.
