Hong Kong failed to reach the best eight of the Hong Kong Sevens
HONG KONG, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) — China’s Hong Kong failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens after suffering two straight losses at Hong Kong Stadium on Saturday.
The 3-day tournament saw 16 teams divided into 4 groups to compete in a single round-robin format. China’s Hong Kong, who is in Group A alongside Australia, New Zealand and Samoa, opened the tournament with her 43-0 defeat to defending champions Australia on Friday.
In the early match of the second round, China’s Hong Kong surrendered to New Zealand 38 to 14 despite the edition’s first point.
In the next dead rubber against Samoa, Hong Kong SAR scored strongly within seconds, but Samoa came from behind with a final result of 31-15. With three losses, the hosts had to join the ninth-place QF.
Samoa reached the quarter-finals of the tournament with Australia in Group A on a three-game winning streak, while Ireland, Fiji and France also dominated their respective groups with impeccable records, reaching the quarter-finals in great style. South Africa, Argentina and the United States also advanced to the quarterfinals with her second place in the pool.
The Hong Kong Sevens champion will be decided on Sunday.
